Storm lashes Florida, delaying Republican convention

Tropical Storm Isaac lashed southern Florida Sunday and was expected to become a hurricane after forcing a one-day delay to the main events of the US Republican convention.

With winds reaching 65 miles (100 kilometers) per hour, the storm brought rain and choppy seas to the Florida Keys after battering Haiti and sweeping across Cuba late Saturday, the Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Florida Keys and parts of the state's southwest coast, and the Republican Party announced that severe weather warnings had postponed the start of its four-day gathering in Tampa.

According to the adjusted plan, the gathering will nominally open Monday and then immediately adjourn to reconvene on Tuesday, when the weather is expected to clear up.

Early Sunday, the eye of the storm was around 80 miles southeast of Key West, Florida and it was moving northwest at 18 miles per hour, with forecasts suggesting it would strengthen over the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

In its 11:00 am (1500 GMT) advisory, the NHC said Isaac was expected to be at or near hurricane strength as it passes over the Keys and predicted "hurricane conditions" there and in southwest Florida.

After sweeping across the string of islands off Florida's southern coast, the storm is on track to churn through the Gulf and make landfall Wednesday in Louisiana or Mississippi.

Tens of thousands of Republicans will be in Tampa for speeches, parties and the formal nomination of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the candidate to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told CNN the decision was motivated by concern for delegates traveling in buses over long bridges and the difficulty of erecting tents to shelter security lines at venue entrances.

He insisted, however, that the show would go on, saying: "We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday."

Thousands of convention delegates are to stay in hotels along a coastal barrier island, which is likely to bear the brunt of the storm, and a decision was to be made on Sunday over whether to move them to higher ground.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, had earlier sought to calm jitters about the weather, saying the storm might bring heavy rain to Tampa on the first of the four-day convention but would be followed by sunny skies.

"There may be wet shoes, but every day after Monday ought to be fine," Buckhorn told Fox News on Saturday.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a trip to Tampa and other Florida cities because of the approaching storm, Obama's Democratic campaign said.

And in the Gulf of Mexico, BP evacuated its Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest offshore production and drilling facility.

Isaac was near hurricane strength early Saturday when the eye of the storm passed over Haiti, where hundreds of thousands of people are still living in squalid, makeshift camps following a catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

An eight-year-old Haitian girl died when a wall collapsed at her home and a 51-year-old woman died when her roof collapsed, according to officials, who later said two other people had also died in the storm.

More than 3,300 families had been evacuated to temporary shelters ahead of Isaac as aid groups provided clean water and hygiene kits to try to limit the risk of contaminated water and the spread of disease.

Cuba declared a state of alert in the island's six eastern provinces, where nearly five million people live, and evacuated around 5,000 foreign and local tourists from beachside hotels.

Damien Hobgood and Brett Simpson survive Round 2 at Billabong Pro Tahiti

America?s Damien Hobgood and his fellow countryperson Brett Simpson qualified for the third round of Billabong Pro Tahiti, the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Teahupo?o in Taiarapu, Tahiti, on Friday, August 17.

Australia?s Matt Wilkinson finished behind Hobgood to surrender the Round 3 spot to his rival, consequently finding himself eliminated from the contention for the event title.

Simpson managed to take the win over Australia?s Adam Melling in the 10th heat to advance to the next round of the competition while removing the latter from the event.

The latest day of the elite tour event continued to deliver exquisite performances as the surfing elite took each other on to try and extend their life in the competition. Due to the pressure of elimination, the surfers were expected to push hard and deliver performances that were bound to get the crowd in attendance as well as the global audience excited.

The ninth heat saw Hobgood and Wilkinson pitted against each other in a man-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot. The lacklustre performance on day 1 of the competition had left them both fighting for survival, giving them very little room for error.

Hobgood locked his first business-wave to post a 6.17 on the score-board and went on to add an additional 8.43 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.60 points.

Wilkinson failed to come up with an adequate response, scoring a mere 4.67 and 5.67 off his best-two waves to register a heat-total of 10.34 points.

The tenth heat saw Simpson and Melling take each other on in a man-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot.

The American surfer scored a 4.77 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 5.50-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 10.27 points.

Melling responded with a lacklustre performance, struggling to find his rhythm and only managed to score a 2.10 and 1.33 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 3.43 points. As a result, he was forced to surrender the Round 3 spot to his rival.

Calendars For Football and Rugby Fans

Calendars can make fantastic gifts for buddies and loved ones, distinct when they feature photographs and images of the recipient?s favourite hobbies and interests. Sports calendars are well-liked year right after year, as they can function wide varieties of sports such as football, rugby, moto gp, formula 1, cricket, wrestling and tennis to name but a few.

Selecting the excellent football calendar simply comes down to generating certain you pick one particular which characteristics your loved one?s favourite group. All sorts of premiership and league one particular team calendars are offered on the industry, as properly as the Scottish Premier League and these teams in reduce divisions. National calendars are also obtainable, such as the England, Welsh or Scottish football group, as properly as other nations from across the world.

Most men and women who buy a football calendar like to have an appear at photographs of their favourite footballers in action, as effectively as read snippets of information and details about their group or the players. The majority of calendars also have plenty of area for critical events and appointments to be jotted down, making it not only an eye catching feature but also a beneficial one as well.

Rugby fans also have a wide selection of calendars available to them. National rugby teams frequently feature on a rugby calendar, as well as teams in the Rugby League and the Rugby Union. Picking a humorous rugby calendar can also make an best gift for rugby fans. Cartoon pictures can be accompanied by funny captions to amuse even the most critical of rugby fans.

As new calendars are inevitably created year on year, suppliers constantly have to come up with some eye catching styles which are as up to date as feasible. This can be made slightly tough as the sporting seasons are often distinct to the Gregorian calendar, so modifications within teams such as football transfers are usually not reflected in the final printed calendar. Even so, sports fans understand this and will continue to proudly display their favourite team?s calendar for the duration of the year.

Engineers achieve longstanding goal of stable nanocrystalline metals

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Most metals -- from the steel used to build bridges and skyscrapers to the copper and gold used to form wires in microchips -- are made of crystals: orderly arrays of molecules forming a perfectly repeating pattern. In many cases, including the examples above, the material is made of tiny crystals packed closely together, rather than one large crystal. Indeed, for many purposes, making the crystals as small as possible provides significant advantages in performance, but such materials are often unstable: The crystals tend to merge and grow larger if subjected to heat or stress.

Now, MIT researchers have found a way to avoid that problem. They've designed and made alloys that form extremely tiny grains -- called nanocrystals -- that are only a few billionths of a meter across. These alloys retain their nanocrystalline structure even in the face of high heat. Such materials hold great promise for high-strength structural materials, among other potential uses.

The new findings, including both a theoretical basis for identifying specific alloys that can form nanocrystalline structures and details on the actual fabrication and testing of one such material, are described in a paper published Aug. 24 in Science.

Graduate student Tongjai Chookajorn, of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), guided the effort to design and synthesize a new class of tungsten alloys with stable nanocrystalline structures. Her fellow DMSE graduate student, Heather Murdoch, came up with the theoretical method for finding suitable combinations of metals and the proportions of each that would yield stable alloys. Chookajorn then successfully synthesized the material and demonstrated that it does, in fact, have the stability and properties that Murdoch's theory predicted. They, along with their advisor Christopher Schuh, the Danae and Vasilis Salapatas Professor of Metallurgy and department head of DMSE, are co-authors of the paper.

For decades, researchers and the metals industry have tried to create alloys with ever-smaller crystalline grains, Schuh says. But, he adds, "nature does not like to do that. Nature tends to find low-energy states, and bigger crystals usually have lower energy."

Looking for pairings with the potential to form stable nanocrystals, Murdoch studied many combinations of metals that are not found together naturally and have not been produced in the lab. "The conventional metallurgical approach to designing an alloy doesn't think about grain boundaries," Schuh explains, but rather focuses on whether the different metals can be made to mix together or not. But, he adds, it's the grain boundaries that are crucial for creating stable nanocrystals. So Murdoch came up with a way of incorporating these grain boundary conditions into the team's calculations.

Why go to the trouble of designing such materials? Because they can have properties that other, more conventional metals and alloys do not, the researchers say. For example, the alloy of tungsten and titanium that the MIT researchers developed and tested in this study is likely exceptionally strong, and could find applications in protection from impacts, guarding industrial or military machinery or for use in vehicular or personal armor. But the researchers stress that this fundamental research could lead to a wide range of potential uses. "This is one case study, but there are potentially hundreds of alloys we could make," Schuh says.

Other nanocrystalline materials designed using these methods could have additional important qualities, such as exceptional resistance to corrosion, the team says. But finding materials that will remain stable with such tiny crystal grains, out of the nearly infinite number of possible combinations and proportions of the dozens of metallic elements, would be nearly impossible through trial and error. "We can calculate, for hundreds of alloys, which ones work, and which don't," Murdoch says.

The key to designing nanocrystalline alloys, they found, is "finding the systems where, when you add an alloying element, it goes to the grain boundaries and stabilizes them," Schuh says, rather than distributing uniformly through the material. Under classical metallurgical theory, such a selective arrangement of materials is not expected to occur.

The tungsten-titanium material that Chookajorn synthesized, which has grains just 20 nanometers across, remained stable for a full week at a temperature of 1,100 degrees Celsius -- a temperature consistent with processing techniques such as sintering, where powdered material is packed into a mold and heated to produce a solid shape. This means this alloy could easily become a practical material for a variety of applications where its high strength and impact resistance would be important, the researchers say.

Julia Weertman, a professor emerita of materials science and engineering at Northwestern University, says this work "represents a significant advancement toward the goal of creating nanocrystalline alloys that are usable at elevated temperatures." She adds that "Schuh and his students, using thermodynamic considerations, derived a method to choose alloys that will remain stable at high temperatures. ? This research opens up the use of microstructurally stable nanocrystalline alloys in high temperature applications, such as engines for aircraft or power generation."

The work was funded by the U.S. Army Research Office.
