NewsDaily: Germany rebuffs renewed euro bond debate

Germany rebuffs renewed euro bond debate

Posted 2011/08/20 at 12:28 pm EDT

BERLIN, Aug. 20, 2011 (Reuters) ? Germany on Saturday rebuffed renewed calls that euro zone countries should issue joint euro-denominated bonds and have a joint finance minister, arguing that would only be possible if fiscal policy were collective already.

"As long as we don't collectivise financial policy we also cannot have a uniform interest rate level. The different rate levels are the incentive to run a solid economy or the punishment if you are not running it properly," Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, speaking at his ministry's open day.

"So the question is, how do we manage to promote political integration step by step. We cannot collectivise interest rates," Schaeuble said, referring to proposals that the euro currency bloc should issue common euro bonds.

Germany has led resistance to calls that the euro currency bloc should issue common euro bonds and expand its bailout fund to calm repeated market selloffs of government bonds and bank shares of vulnerable debtor countries.

Der Spiegel magazine reported finance ministry calculations that showed issuing joint euro bonds would cost Germany billions of euros each year.

However, Martin Blessing, Chief Executive of Germany's second-largest lender Commerzbank said a European finance minister with sway over member states' taxes and budget was needed to lead the euro zone out of its debt crisis.

Berlin is also facing criticism over its own proposals to solve the euro zone crisis, which include a financial transaction tax that Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said this week they would propose to other euro zone members.

Schaeuble is to meet his French counterpart Francois Baroin in Paris on Tuesday to discuss the health of Europe's finances including remedies such as the tax.

Andreas Schmitz, the head of the association of German banks (BdB), whose clients would be directly affected by the tax, said the tax would be inefficient and would not prevent financial crises as professional traders did not care where they traded and would simply avoid Europe.

"The big tax income will fail to appear," he told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Proponents of the tax expect it could raise 30 to 50 billion euros a year.

Higher prices: the big trend for back-to-school

Shoppers pass Macy's department store, Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 in New York. The back-to-school season got off to a strong start as discounts and sweltering heat in July drove shoppers to air-conditioned malls. But retailers worry that momentum won't continue through the remainder of the second-biggest shopping period of the year. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)

(AP) ? Stores are trying everything they can think of to disguise the fact that you're going to pay more for clothes this fall.

Some are using less fabric and calling it the new look. Others are adding cheap stitching and trumpeting it as a redesign. And the buttons on that blouse? Chances are you're not going to think it's worth paying several dollars more for the shirt just to have them.

Retailers are raising prices on merchandise an average of 10 percent across-the-board this fall in an effort to offset their rising costs for materials and labor. But merchants are worried that cash-strapped customers who are weighed down by economic woes will balk at price hikes. So, retailers are trying to raise prices without tipping off unsuspecting customers.

"Let the consumer trickery begin," said Brian Sozzi, Wall Street Strategies retail analyst

Retailers have long tried to mask price hikes ? for instance, jacking them up more than needed so that they can offer a "sale" on the higher price. But the new strategies come as merchants' production and labor costs are expected to rise 10 percent to 20 percent in the second half of the year after having remained low during most of the past two decades. Costs can quickly add up: Raw materials account for 25 percent to 50 percent of the cost of producing a garment, while labor ranges from 20 percent to 40 percent, analysts estimate.

Stores already have passed along their rising costs to customers by raising prices on select items. The core Consumer Price Index, which includes spending on everything except food and energy, rose 0.2 percent in July, the Labor Department said Thursday. But now that production costs are going up even higher, merchants are increasing prices on a broader range of merchandise. Because of their concern that shoppers will retreat, though, retailers are treading the line between style, quality and price.

Some merchants are making inexpensive tweaks __ additional stitching, fake button holes, fancy tags __ to justify price increases. Those embellishments can add pennies to $1 to the cost of a garment, but retailers can charge $10 more for them, said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with market research firm The NPD Group.

"We're not seeing deflation or inflation; we're seeing con-flation," he said. "Stores are making consumers believe their getting more for their money."

After the price of the fabric for its girl's corduroy pants almost doubled, catalog retailer Lands' End, based in Dodgeville, Wis., raised the price of the pants by $7 to $34.50. The company, a unit of Sears Holdings Corp., also added buttons and stitching on the pockets to dress them up.

"Consumers are going to notice the price differences," said Michele Casper, a Lands' End spokeswoman. "But they are also going to get a lot of added benefits so they know they're not getting short-changed."

Others are taking away things, but marketing it to customers as the latest trend.

Spencer Elmen, owner of Cupid's Lingerie, which operates five stores in Arkansas, said he is seeing more items in his store that are even skimpier than usual, from underwear to mini dresses. He says that's because designers are finding clever ways to conceal the fact that they're clothes have less fabric.

Elmen said $39.99 teddies, which are $5 more than that they were last year, feature a studded heart that gathers up the material to disguise the fact that less fabric is being used. He also noted that the corsets with fishnet patterns are priced about 5 percent more at about $49, even though they also have less material.

"They're just being more creative with less fabric," Elmen said.

Teen retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is advertising "Redesigned 2012" jean collection in its stores and on its website, touting that the jeans are "softer, with the perfect amount of stretch." They're also mostly priced between $78 and $88, about $10 more than last year, according to Jennifer Black, who heads up research firm Jennifer Black & Associates.

Sozzi, the Wall Street Strategies retail analyst, examined the jeans and believes they are "thinner" and of "cheaper quality." That extra stretch, he says, simply could mean the retailer is saving costs by using less denim.

Eric Cerny, an Abercrombie & Fitch spokesman, declined to comment. But Cerny reiterated what executives told investors in recent months: the bulk of increases on items will start to happen in September and the chain will not sacrifice quality to achieve cost reductions.

Bill Melnick, director of strategic planning at SAI Marketing, which studies consumer behavior at major consumer brands, said most shoppers may not notice retailers' tactics to disguise prices. But he says shoppers won't buy if they can't afford it.

"Shoppers are being pragmatic," he says, nothing that they think "'If it fits into my budget, then it's a sale.'"

Rhonda Sayen, a Stephens City, Va., resident, said she checked out prices on new fall items and noticed jeans that were about $40 a year ago are now closer to $60. She also said she's spotted lower quality T-shirts at some of the stores.

"I know prices have changed," said Sayen, who added that she and her husband are sticking to a $400 budget for clothing and supplies for her four children ages 3 to 18. "You ain't fooling me."

How to make a cross class/cultural relationship work?

I'd like to hear some experiences regarding cross cultural and/or "class" relationships. If your partner has a different cultural background and/or comes from another social class, how have you made it work or has it worked at all?

I'm a biracial bisexual woman who comes from a rich family, had two new cars before i had my drivers license and have gone to private school since i was a toddler- yes i was enrolled in a toddler computer course. I'm going to school to get my degree in law. The love of my life is 11 years my senior, white, straight, and grew up on welfare, spent most of his life homeless hitchhiking through Europe in the punk rock scene and lives on SSI disability income. The biggest problem isn't with us it's with other people. His family always expects me to support him and mine thinks hes beneath me, and it makes things so hard. he cannot spend any time with my family without being insulted and I sometimes feel uncomfortable with his friends and family because before him I didn't know what food stamps or welfare even was. I think it can work you just have to set ahead of time what you want your life together to be like. Like I feel that I constantly have to pull him up but theres a standard of living that I want and you have to let him know either you meet this or a I can't do this. Love him in spite of it but don't let him bring you down.

Hmmy, tricky. Depends on what cultural background you are from. try to keep in mind what brought the two of you together in the first place and focus on that. Compromise is key of course. If you are from two very Strong Cultures and have traditional conflicts in your beliefs you will have to look past them.

Cross Class/ Cultural Reships RARELY, IF EVER work??too many probs like bringing up the the Children, Holiday Celebrations, etc, etc?. just like Long Distances Rel'ships!
NO INSULT Intended but, I was brought up to, "Stick to your OWN Kind"??makes life a heck of a lot easier!

Russ Bohaty talking about sweet Carly's toughest race | RussBohaty.com

Monday, August 15th, 2011 at 7:30 am ?

Hey Everyone,

Some great stories taking place out there. The people involved proving once again why Auto Racing is the sport without compare. I don't know where to start because you feel like you are slighting who do you don't lead with.

Team Carly Q

Little Carly is one of ?far less than 100 children on the planet and under 20 in the United States to be afflicted with Progeria. This condition causes accelerated aging. Those who have it fight a mighty battle for time and life. My friend Mike is a mega Kasey Kahne fan and Carly is his cousin's daughter. ?I want to mention her and the great work being done on her behalf through the Progeria Research Foundation. ? Mike told me that Carly's family gets financial help for her very costly medical needs and they work with her to make sure she gets in on the latest potential treatments.. ?Mikes says She's a playful, sweet, happy little girl with lots of spirit. ?You can see it in the photos. ? If there is anything you can do as far as contributing money to the foundation, the web address is ?http://teamcarlyq.com/donate-progeria-research-foundation?(linked) It also helps just to talk about Carly on social media like facebook and twitter to raise awareness. ?She likes new friends and you can go to her facebook page and say hi too.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Carly-Q/116888051730944?sk=wall

By all means, take these links and post them on your websites, facebook pages, and your twitter tweets. (jeez, I can't believe how far I have come with the computer lingo) Everything matters, no matter what it is.

Mike told me that he got in touch with folks close to Kasey Kahne about contributing items for a fund raiser and heard back so quickly pledging items, it was like he had reached out to family for help. ?Let me say this, Kasey doesn't need me telling the world what a quality guy he is. His family, friends and fans already know it. He takes his fans very seriously and he has a super heart for people. This is a great example of his strong belief that his fans are family and his devotion to them. I mention it because it makes me proud. The best is yet to come for him on and off that track.

Kasey Kahne's Racing Passion

We talked about Kasey's wild accident in the World of Outlaws race a few weeks ago right here in this magazine. One of the really interesting aspects of the story is how frequently NASCAR Sprint ?Cup Series elite's like Kasey participate in circuits that aren't as well recognized nationally. ?Many non-race fans find this practice odd. ?They often note that it would seem scary to sponsors and team owners who need them in one piece for the mega dollar events that get all the broadcase coverage. ?My friend Angie from VictoryK (the best Kasey Kahne fan site on earth) brought this item to our attention a few weeks ago. Link to the discussion on the topic and the article discussing the practice. Tony Stewart is the featured racer and when it comes to being defiant and blunt, can't think of anyone better.

Kevin Durant caused a big stir among basketball fans with his participation in a pick up game at New York's legendary Rucker Park Playground last week. Race fans yawned.

It is no different than seeing Kevin Durant, NBA star, play pick up ball last week right? Nope. Racing is so varied with dirt, road, oval and types of cars like like sprint cars, stock cars, drag racing, formula 1, etc. When Kasey Kahne goes to World of Outlaws, it is for the intense competition and passion. He is just one of many Racers trying to get a win. Sure he's Kasey Kahne, but on any track that entitles him to nothing but what other Racers have: a chance to compete and win. Like Tony Stewart said in Angie's article, Racers are about racing and the wins are coveted in all types of races. Not just the ones Sunday afternoons on Fox. They grew up racing for the love and that still carries the day. Team owners and sponsors know this when they take a racer into the fold. You can't tell a racer not to race.

Speaking of Racing and Passion.....

Brad Keselowski winning at Pocono with this:

?

Me talking about how tough Racers are really is like me commenting on the wetness of tap water.

AP Exclusive: Ouattara: no knowledge of massacre

In this photo taken on June 1, 2011, soldiers allied with President Alassane Ouattara walk through a deserted remote campsite along the forest track leading from Blolequin, Ivory Coast through the Dedjan campsite to the Cavally River, western Ivory's Coast border with Liberia. It's been six months since former rebel groups, aided by the U.N. and French troops helped Alassane Ouattara assume the presidency, after former leader Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede defeat in a November presidential election. Now a new national army exists on paper, but the rebel forces that fought to bring Ouattara to power still reign on the ground. Amnesty International released a report Wednesday, July 27, 2011, accusing Ouattara's Republican Forces of continuing to carry out violence and intimidation against ethnicities perceived as having supported his rival, former president Laurent Gbagbo. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell)

(AP) ? Ivory Coast's president said he knows nothing about brutal killings committed by his forces the day after his inauguration and defended a senior officer accused of separate atrocities as one of the country's best soldiers.

President Alassane Ouattara, whose election victory in November was followed by a violent, four-month-long standoff with the country's former ruler, told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that all those found to have committed atrocities would be punished, no matter their position.

"I am against impunity," he said.

But a report by Amnesty International released Wednesday accuses Ouattara's Republican Forces of continuing to carry out violence and intimidation against ethnic groups perceived as having supported his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo. A different report by Human Rights Watch released in June alleges that forces loyal to Ouattara killed up to 149 people believed to be Gbagbo supporters.

The rights group cited a witness who said that a commander loyal to Ouattara, Cherif Ousmane, ordered the execution of 29 detainees. Two others said they saw Ousmane in a car that "disposed of the tortured and executed body of an infamous militia leader."

"This cannot be true," Ouattara said Friday. "Cherif Ousmane is one of the best soldiers."

In fact, he added, soldiers who serve under Ousmane are known for being well-trained, polite and helpful.

"In any case, if we discover that anyone has committed atrocities, that person will be properly judged and sanctions will be taken," the president said. Ouattara added that he believed the report was based on interviews with mercenaries.

But recent violence, including the separate massacre of up to 47 people on the banks of the Cavally River at the very least raises the question of whether Ouattara has any control over the forces that helped put him in office.

"If President Ouattara is serious about impartial justice, he needs to better ensure that leaders of his security forces don't have blood on their hands," said Matthew Wells, who authored the report by Human Rights Watch.

Ouattara's victory in the West African country's first free and fair election in a decade was perceived as a turning point. But the outgoing president, Gbagbo, refused to leave. Ouattara was only able to take office after he enlisted the help of a rebel army that helped him seize control of the country.

Almost 700,000 people remain in camps for displaced people in the country's remote far west and in refugee camps across the porous jungle border in Liberia and Guinea.

The brutal killings documented by the AP took place deep into Gbagbo land on the river bank on the border with Liberia the day after Ouattara's May 21 inauguration.

Ouattara's forces opened fire with a machine gun, killing as many as 47 refugees who had gathered in the clearing to eat as they made their way back from Liberia, lured by Ouattara's message of reconciliation.

Ouattara's regional commander for western Ivory Coast, Capt. Eddie Mindi, said his soldiers opened fire after being attacked by Gbagbo's mercenaries, and denied most of the dead were civilians. Ouattara said Friday he had never heard of Mindi.

Ouattara, in Washington for a White House meeting with President Barack Obama and the presidents of Benin, Guinea, and Niger, said it would take time for his country to heal after years of violence. He said a report on postelection violence by a national commission of inquiry would be sent to prosecutors by the end of the year.

"I think reconciliation has started," he said.

Ouattara said he has accomplished a lot in the short time he has been in office, including restructuring the security forces and restoring confidence in the economy.

He invited refugees in camps in neighboring Liberia and Guinea to return home, and said he recently urged members of the army in exile to return.

"If there is nothing against them, obviously they will be free," he said. "Especially I told them that their security will be guaranteed."
