Woman Calls 911 Because She Got the Wrong Chinese Food [Video]

Police in Savannah, Georgia took to reminding residents today that they should only use 911 for emergencies. Because apparently, calling and asking for officers to come to the Hong Kong restaurant on Largo Drive to tell those "idiots" that they shouldn't have gotten your order wrong does not an emergency make. The audio, above. [via WMBF] More »

Powwow aims to raise breast cancer awareness - The Buffalo Post

Vanessa Roberts, 15, of Davenport, a member of the Lakota Sioux from Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, left, and Sophie Shuckahosee, 4, of Tama, a member of the Yankton Sioux, dance during the 7 Feathers Foundation's Honoring Women of the Sweet Grass Path Pow Wow. (Dan Williamson/Freelance, the Gazette))

Pink has become synonymous with fight against breast cancer, and the pink shawls and regalia were many at this weekend?s Honoring Women of the Sweet Grass pow wow in Iowa City?s Upper City Park.

The Gazette reports that the powwow was held to help raise awareness about the disease, which is four times as likely to kill Native women.

The event included information about the Pink Shawl Project, a project funded by the Iowa Cancer Consortium which brings Native American women together to sew shawls and talks about breast health, the Gazette reports.

The event was sponsored by the nonprofit group Seven Feathers.

(Seven Feathers Executive Director Judy A. Morrison) emphasized that attending pow wows is not only a great way to make new friends, build relations, celebrate community and learn more about Native American culture, but also raise awareness of obstacles, including health issues, being faced by Native American communities.

?We [Seven Feathers] depend on donations from events like pow wows and grants to survive,? Morrison said.

One man's 'psychotic' mission to retrieve bin Laden's body (The Week)

New York ? Is the truth down there? That's what deep-sea treasure hunter Bill Warren wants to find out by trolling the Arabian Sea for the terrorist's remains

Southern California salvage diver Bill Warren says he's embarking on his most ambitious hunt yet for undersea treasure: The corpse of Osama bin Laden. Warren, who has successfully discovered some 150 shipwrecks, says he'll spend at least two weeks scouring the floor of the North Arabian Sea for bin Laden's body, at a cost of $11,000 a day. Since President Obama won't release photos of bin Laden's corpse, Warren says, he's taking it upon himself to photograph the body and get DNA samples to share with the world. Here, a brief guide to Warren's odyssey:

What's Warren's plan?
Warren says he is renting a ship in India, which will be outfitted with sonar and other specialty equipment, and a remote-operated submarine. If he finds bin Laden's body, the sub would bring it up to the boat for documentation. Even though the remains have been at the bottom of the sea since May 2, they would still be well preserved "in a sealed Navy burial bag, zipped up, white canvas, rubber-lined inside, 200 lbs. of lead weight," Warren says.

What is he thinking?
Warren says he's just a "patriotic American who wants to know the truth," and share it with a skeptical world. But he also "thinks he can still collect the government reward" of $25 million, since it's for finding bin Laden "dead or alive," says Joe Coscarelli at?The Village Voice. Of course, this hunt is "psychotic,"?says Simone Wilson in LA Weekly. And a "publicity stunt," too.

What are the chances he'll find bin Laden?
Slim to none, says LA Weekly's Wilson. If Warren thinks he can track down the corpse along "kilometers and kilometers worth of pitch-black ocean floor," he's "one optimistic deather." Sure, "finding a white canvas bag under similarly colored-sand would seem near impossible," says Colleen Stufflebeem at?Death + Taxes, "if it weren't for the side scan sonar and the countless days and hours Warren is going to spend searching."

Is this really a good idea?
"We wish him luck," says LA Weekly's Wilson. "If by some miracle Warren does succeed," the photos of a waterlogged bin Laden "would be priceless." I'm not well-versed in the laws and morality of "deep sea grave-robbing," says Stufflebeem, "but I am almost positive this is going to anger a lot of people." Between the CIA, al Qaeda, sharks, and pirates interested in his "pricey boat and expensive equipment," it would surprise me if he comes out of this alive.

Gainsbourg's smoky voice selling perfume in France (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The work of Serge Gainsbourg, the large-nosed, Gitanes-smoking French icon whose jazzy, bohemian songs exemplified a sexually liberated France of the 1960s and 1970s, is enjoying a resurgence in the most unlikely of places -- perfume ads.

Two upscale brands, Christian Dior and Guerlain, both controlled by luxury giant LVMH, have chosen Gainsbourg's rasping voice for television ad campaigns currently running on French TV for the perfumes Miss Dior and Shalimar.

The artist who half-spoke, half-sang his songs and died in 1991 is beloved in France. Despite what he himself called his ugly face, Gainsbourg had a long string of lovers, including Brigitte Bardot, and brought a sexually charged energy to his music that is now being seized on by advertisers.

In the ad for Shalimar, a brand that first debuted in the 1920s, naked model Natalia Vodianova writhes on an unmade bed as the catchy piano riff of Gainsbourg's "The Initials BB" plays.

Gainsbourg's most suggestive and once-censored song, "Je t'aime...Moi Non Plus," (I love you ... me neither') which he recorded with then-lover Jane Birkin is the soundtrack to a Miss Dior perfume ad shot by director Sofia Coppola and starring Oscar winner Natalie Portman.

As Birkin's breathy voice catches in an apparent sexual climax, Portman lounges in a lavish, sun-filled Paris apartment, occasionally sniffing pink roses or gazing longingly at her tuxedo-clad lover.

Gainsbourg's status as an icon of "chanson" -- that decidedly French genre of lyric-based poems sung by such greats as Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel -- makes him an attractive target for advertisers, argues David Looseley, emeritus professor of contemporary French culture at the University of Leeds.

"These people, once they're dead, they're immediately acquired for their nostalgic element which gives the product not just the image of contemporary sexiness but an extra allure of the past," Looseley said.

The consumer products, he said, are then colored with a "slightly sepia edge," a retro quality that "slightly distances the sexuality... makes it a bit more palatable."

Gainsbourg's popularity has never really faded -- his grave in Paris's Montparnasse cemetery still attracts fans who leave flowers, cigarettes and Metro stubs for their idol -- but a recent upsurge in interest has kept his name in front of fans.

"Gainsbourg, The Man Who Loved Women," a documentary released last year, chronicled 30 years of the provocateur's relationships with a host of personal and professional muses from Birkin and Bardot to Catherine Deneuve, Francoise Hardy and Vanessa Paradis.

A film about the singer's life, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" reaped France's prestigious Cesar awards earlier this year for lead actor Eric Elmosnino and director Joann Sfar.

Meanwhile, the actress-singer daughter of Gainsbourg and Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, has kept alive the name of her father, with whom she first sang as a teen on his recording, Lemon Incest.

And like her father, the younger Gainsbourg is now linked to the heady world of fragrance -- as the face of Balenciaga perfume.

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere? [Video]

Whitson Gordon ?Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?Having to sync all your music between devices is annoying. Luckily a number of cloud music services allow you to stream your music to nearly everything?laptops, tablets, smartphones?with minimal effort or tech know-how. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on your needs; here's how to figure out which one's best for you.

You may have put a lot of effort into cultivating your home computer's music library, but you probably want to listen to that music other places, too. If you want to have that library with you wherever you go, you have a few different services to choose from. Here, we're going to go through some of today's most popular streaming services, where each of them excels, needs work, and how to decide which one fits your needs the best. Note that we're covering only services that let you play your library wherever you go, not "radio" services like Pandora or Last.fm. The goal is to never be without your music library.

Unfortunately, a number of these only work on one platform, while others are paid or only stream a certain amount of songs. To start your search, check out the chart below. Find out which ones work for your platform, which will fit your library, and so on, and then check out the more detailed descriptions below to figure out which one seems like the best fit.

Google Music Kicks Butt on Android and the Web

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?Google Music lets you upload your entire library to the web and stream it back over Google's fantastic webapp, as well as the new Android Music app. It's currently free while in beta, and the uploader works on Windows and Mac OS X.

Platform: Google Music can stream to any desktop web browser, as well as Android devices.

Price: Free (while in beta)

Pros: Google Music has one of the best, if not the best, desktop webapp of the bunch. It's smooth, fast, easy to use, and has some cool extra features like the "Instant Mix" and thumbs up that help create on-the-go playlists. The Android app is also pretty snazzy, with some neat album art views and the ability to download songs for offline playback. And, at least for now, it's free, which makes it very tempting.

Google Music's uploader also deserves some recognition, since it's a good deal better than some of the others. Google's uploader will watch your iTunes or Windows Media Player library for changes, so your online library is always up-to-date. If you don't use one of those players, it can also watch a folder on your system for new music. And, since your music probably takes a few days to upload the first time around, it's really nice that it remembers your position. That way, if you need to restart your computer, it will continue uploading where it left off.

Cons: Google Music's biggest con is that it's only available on Android, so iPhone users and other mobile devices are completely left out. Uploading your music also takes awhile (my 30GBG library took a good 3-5 days of near-constant uploading), which can be a pain at first, but afterwards isn't a big deal. Other than those two issues, it's pretty darn awesome.

It's also worth mentioning that Google Music is currently in invite-only beta, so you can't get started right away. You'll need to request an invite first, then wait for it to come in your email.

Who it's Perfect For: Google Music's biggest perk is its awesome webapp. Most of the players on this list can stream to Android, so it isn't "special" there. But if you're streaming to your laptop while, say, on vacation, it stands out amongst the others with it's smooth-as-butter web-based desktop player. So, it's perfect for people who stream a lot to the desktop, and who don't stream to iOS or other non-Android platforms. It's also great if you have a huge library, since the limit on how much you can upload is pretty big.

Amazon Cloud Player Is a Store and Streaming Service Rolled Into One

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere? With Amazon Cloud Player, you pay for a specific amount of space on Amazon.com, and upload your music there for streaming over the web or on Android. You can grab 20GB of space just by buying one Amazon MP3 album, and any tracks you buy on Amazon MP3 go directly into your cloud library without counting toward that space. Its uploader is available for Windows and Mac OS X.

Platform: Amazon Cloud Player can stream to any desktop web browser, as well as Android devices. It can sort of stream to iOS, but it isn't something I would rely on.

Price: $50/year for 50GB, $100 for 100GB, and so on up to 1000GB

Pros: Amazon's webapp is also a pretty good player, and while not on the same level as Google Music, provides a pretty nice experience. Its mobile webapp is also nice, and while it doesn't have a ton of extra features, it does let you listen to both your cloud music and music stored on your device, as well as download songs for offline playback, which is a plus.

Amazon's biggest pro, however, is that it integrates amazingly well with the Amazon MP3 store. If you buy an album on Amazon MP3, it automatically goes into your cloud library, no uploading necessary?and it doesn't count toward your space allotment, which is great. Plus, if you buy an album from Amazom MP3, they'll jack your space up by 15GB, meaning you get a total of 20GB on Amazon Cloud player without subscribing.

Cons: Like Google Music, Amazon Cloud Player is only available on Android and the web, so iOS users are once again (mostly) left out in the cold. In addition, it's uploader is less than friendly. It won't scan your library for changes, so you have to upload any new music manually, and if you have to restart your computer during the initial upload, you have to reselect all the music you want to upload, which is a huge pain. In addition, you pay by the amount of space you use, which if you have a lot of songs isn't great. If you have less than 20GB of music, though, you won't be paying at all.

Who it's Perfect For: Amazon Cloud Player is pretty good, but Google Music trumps it in almost every respect. The only thing it offers that Google doesn't is integration with the Amazon MP3 store, which is nice. I'd say if you buy a ton of music from Amazon MP3, Amazon Cloud Player will make your life a bit easier. If you only buy a few albums every once in a while, though, you might as well take the five minutes to upload them to Google instead, and pass on Amazon's service. Especially since anything you've already bought on Amazon MP3 will have to be uploaded as normal music; it's only music you buy after signing up that goes directly into your library.

iCloud is a Mac and iPhone User's Dream

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?iCloud hasn't rolled out completely yet, but Apple's given us a pretty good idea of what it can do. The goal of iCloud isn't to stream your music, but to make it available to all your devices. It syncs all your iTunes purchases between devices for free, and will make available all your non-iTunes-bought music for a yearly price.

Platform: iCloud can sync to iTunes on Windows and Mac OS X, as well as iOS.

Price: Free for iTunes-bought music, $25/year for non-iTunes music

Pros: iCloud, in traditional Apple fashion, is set up in a way that minimizes the work you have to do. Anything you buy on iTunes will automatically be pushed to your other devices, so you have them wherever you go. It will also scan your library for any non-iTunes-bought tracks, and make iTunes versions of those tracks available to your other devices, which means you don't have to upload your entire library.

Cons: Unfortunately, with the exception of new music bought on iTunes, it doesn't look like iCloud actually streams music?it just makes all that music available for download on your devices. So, if you buy a physical CD and rip it at home, you have to either sync it to your device or re-download the iTunes matched version on your phone and other devices. In the end, it just takes the annoyance of transferring your music away from the desktop and adds it to the mobile side, which is much more annoying.

Who it's Perfect For: It's pretty clear that iCloud is perfect for iTunes users, specifically those that buy most of their music from iTunes. If you get all your new musc from iTunes, this is the service for you. If you still rip your own music (or get it from other, non-iTunes sources), stay away. You're much better off with one of the other services here.

mSpot Streams to Both iOS and Android Devices

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?mSpot is similar to Google Music and Amazon Cloud Player, in the sense that you upload your music and can then stream it to any desktop web browser or your mobile device. Unlike the others, however, mSpot can stream to both iPhone and Android, making it ideal for cross-platform families.

Platform: mSpot streams to any desktop web browser, as well as Android and iOS.

Price: Free for 5GB, $4/month for 40GB

Pros: mSpot has been around for awhile, so it has a few cool features going for it like lyrics searching and online radio stations. It's big draw, though, is that it's cross-platform on mobile, so if you have an iPhone and your spouse/roomate/whatever has an Android phone, you can share a streaming music library. And, like most of the other services, it can cache songs for offline play when you don't have a connection.

Cons: Surprisingly, mSpot doesn't have a ton of cons. Its webapp isn't quite as polished as Google's, but it's still really nice, and easy to use. The only con it really has is its price: mSpot is free for 5GB, but any more than that and you'll have to spring for a $4/month 40GB account. That's a bit more expensive than Amazon, and limits you to 40GB, but still isn't bad for a high-quality, cross-platform app.

Who it's Perfect For: mSpot is the service to use if you want a traditional upload-and-stream experience, but need it on both iPhone and Android. Most of the "cloud locker" services, like Google, Amazon, and iCloud, only work on one platform, making mSpot the best choice for cross-platform families.

Subsonic is Cheap and Streams Nearly Anywhere from Your Home Computer

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?Subsonic is a bit different than the other cloud services mentioned here. Instead of streaming your music from Subsonic's servers, you stream music directly from your home computer. This means that you don't have to ever worry about uploading your music, but it also means you have to keep your main computer on all the time (though it also runs on servers). Subsonic can stream music from pretty much any desktop platform.

Platform: Subsonic can stream to its web-based player on the desktop, as well as Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7.

Price: Free for streaming desktop-to-desktop, $20 donation required for streaming to mobile

Pros: You don't have to upload any music, which means you'll be able to start streaming almost immediately. Just tell it where your music is stored, and you'll be able to access it from your other devices and start streaming (or downloading them for offline play). Depending on your router, however, you may need to forward some ports (though Subsonic does support automatic port mapping for newer routers). Subsonic also has a ton of configuration options, which gives you a lot of power over how you want to stream your media. It also streams videos, which is a really nice touch.

Cons: Subsonic's music player is very basic, and a little ugly. However, it'll get the job done well, and without the need to upload anything, so complaining about it seems a little nitpicky. It also requires your home computer to be on and awake all the time, or at least any time you might want to stream. This may not be a big deal for some, but might annoy others. If you have a server somewhere in your house, it would be perfect for that. Lastly,, its configuration options may be a bit confusing for some, and if you have an old router, you might even need to manually forward some ports.

Who it's Perfect For: Subsonic is perfect for those that have a server or always-on computer in their house, and just want to stream their media to all their devices without the hassle of constantly uploading everything. If you want simple, near-immediate access to your library from afar, Subsonic is the way to do it.

It's also worth mentioning here that if you don't need all the configuration options that Subsonic provides, the free Audiogalaxy service is a very similar service that doesn't require as much setup. If you don't want to deal with IP addresses and port forwarding and all that, Audiogalaxy is another great choice. You won't have as much control, but you'll be up and streaming in no time at all. Plus, it's completely free, whether you're streaming to the desktop or to mobile.

Grooveshark Plays Far More than Just Your Home Library

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?Grooveshark already has its own library of songs, so instead of uploading yours to a library, you can add songs from its massive collection to your own. It also has a feature that scans your library for tracks it already has and adds them to your personal library, as well as uploads tracks it doesn't already have. It works on the web, and streams to a number of mobile platforms for a monthly fee.

Platform: Web, Android, Jailbroken iPhone, Palm, BlackBerry, Nokia

Price: Free; $9/month for mobile streaming

Pros: Grooveshark has a pretty massive library of songs already on its servers, meaning that you can just start streaming whatever you want immediately. Search for a track, and chances are Grooveshark has it. Its player is pretty darn nice too, designed around creating on-the-fly playlists as you search around. What's nice is that you can scan in your current music library, and then add to it with Grooveshark's other offerings. Plus, if you're on a mobile device, you can download songs for offline playback, which is pretty sweet considering you don't even have to upload them in the first place.

Cons: My main problem with Grooveshark is that its selection, while bountiful, is disorganized. Searching its database gives you a ton of different duplicate songs, and scanning my own library was glitchy in and of itself. It imports most songs pretty well, but for some reason some just won't go through, even though it has them on file, and you'll have to add them manually. If your goal is to just get to some music, Grooveshark'll do it, but if you're a bit more obsessive about your metadata and library organizatoin, it might frustrate you a bit too much.

Who it's Perfect For: Grooveshark is perfect for the die hard music junkies that want access to as many tracks as possible. Grooveshark's community-oriented infrastructure means you can access just about any song, even some rare or bootleg tracks as long as someone's uploaded them. And if they haven't, you can, which makes its libraries one of the best around.

Rdio

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere?Rdio is Grooveshark's clean-cut cousin, offering an organized, vast-but-not-infinite library of popular songs for streaming to all your devices. Rdio has a desktop application that scans your iTunes or Windows Media Player library and matches your songs with your online Rdio library, as well as a big social networking component that helps you discover new music. Rdio does have a desktop app, but it isn't that amazing, and probably won't replace your usual desktop player like Spotify might.

Platform: Rdio streams to any desktop browser as well as to Android and iOS devices.

Price: If you're just streaming to the desktop, Rdio costs $5 a month. If you're streaming to mobile as well, it costs $10 a month.

Pros: Like Grooveshark, Rdio lets you stream not just from your own library, but from Rdio's large library of music anywhere you go. You can scan your own library and import those tracks into Rdio, giving you an organized, online version of your library that you can then soup up with extra tracks. Rdio is also extremely organized for the neat freaks among us. It can also download tracks for local storage, so you can listen to them even when you don't have a connection.

Cons: The bad part about Rdio is that you only get the tracks in their library. If you have something that Rdio doesn't, you can't stream it, plain and simple. This isn't a problem for most songs, but if you have a few obscure or bootleg tracks in your library, you won't be able to stream those. And, since it isn't community-built like Grooveshark, there may be a few gaping holes in Rdio's collection if a certain record label or band hasn't signed on with them.

Who it's Perfect For: Rdio is great for those that want to listen to more than just the library they have on hand, but prefer a bit more organization (and legitimacy) when they do it. Rdio's also great for anyone that likes to constantly discover new music, as its social networking service is a really big part of the webapp. If your friends are on it, it would benefit you to be on it as well.

Spotify

Cloud Music Comparison: What's the Best Service for Streaming Your Library Everywhere? Spotify is a very clever streaming service. Instead of streaming from its own central servers, most music is streamed from person-to-person. However, apart from its internals, it seems very similar to services like Grooveshark and Rdio: it has a library from which you can stream music, and it can scan your library and let you play all of those tracks from the Spotify desktop player, as well as sync your playlists to your mobile device.

Platform: Spotify is a desktop app available for Windows and Mac, though it runs under WINE in Linux. You can also stream to Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7, Palm, and Symbian.

Price: Price differs by country, but in Europe you should find that the price is around 5?/month for unlimited desktop streaming, and 10?/month for mobile streaming. You can stream a limited amount of music for free, as well as listen to as much of your existing music as you want.

Pros: Spotify's pros are pretty much the same as Rdio's: you have a massive library from which you can amp up your own, existing library, and stream nearly any of its tracks wherever you are. Spotify's also available on a ton of different devices, meaning if you have a phone running something other than Andorid or iOS, you might actually be able to use one of these services (go figure).

Cons: The big problem with Spotify, like Rdio, is that it doesn't let you upload your own tracks to the service. While you can play your rare, bootleg, or obscure tracks on your own computer, you can't stream those to other computers or you mobile device. Again, you have access to a ton of different songs, but there are a select few you just won't be able to play. In addition, Spotify still isn't available in the US, so US users have to go through a lot of trouble to use it. For the record, you can sync them directly to your mobile device. It isn't perfect (after all, the point is to not have to sync), but it's better than nothing. At least you can still listen to those rare tracks on your mobile device, whereas with something like Rdio you're SOL.

Who it's Perfect For: Spotify has a fantastic desktop player, so if you aren't really into webapps, this is where it's at. While you might only use the other webapps for streaming, Spotify will replace your regular desktop player entirely. So if you like to listen to a lot of tracks from all over the place all the time, Spotify's a good one to look at.

That's not every streaming service out there, but it's more than enough to get you started. Each of them is a little different, in ways both big and small, so if more than one seems to suit your fancy, try it out. Most have free trials, and you can upload just a small portion of your library and play around with the apps to see if you like them. Got a favorite that we didn't mention here? Interview: Brownice ? Amazing Vegan Ice Cream Like No Other

This is part of the Successful Businesses Interview Series, where I feature successful businesses that are making a difference in others? lives.

Brownice Ice Cream

The 8th and last interview in our Successful Businesses Interview Series features Brownice, the vegan ice cream like no other. Brownice is the first vegan ice cream brand in Singapore and is well known among the local veg*n community.

I love Brownice. It?s my favorite ice cream. When I decided to turn vegan, I was totally okay with not having ice cream for the rest of my life. Then my veg*n friends kept telling me about Brownice, a vegan brand ice cream which tastes just like normal ice cream, if not better.

I thought ?Okay?, but didn?t think much about it. After all, if I?m already okay with not eating ice cream at all, it doesn?t matter if vegan ice cream exists out there. I?m just not going to have ice cream. As simple as that.

One day (sometime March this year), I finally got to try Brownice while I was out with some vegetarian friends. Boy was I amazed. It tasted just as nice, if not better, than regular dairy ice cream. (IMO, it?s far better than dairy ice cream ? the taste of cow?s milk turns me off now that I?m vegan.)?I finally understood what my friends were raving about. It?s that good!

Fast forward a couple of months later, when I started the Successful Businesses Interview Series. I brainstormed on a list of businesses to feature for the series, and reached out to Brownice as it had touched my life. From there, I got to know Denise (Lim), owner and creator of the amazing ice cream. We met up for dinner one day, instantly connected, and today we?re great friends!

Even though Denise and I haven?t known each other for long (in terms of length of time), I felt like she?s an ?old soul?, like someone I?ve known for a while and can say anything to, and she?d be able to know where I?m coming from. Both of us come from dissimilar backgrounds yet share so many similar beliefs, which make for great conversation. Our first meetup was filled with thought-provoking conversation, where we openly shared our thoughts and our views on life with one another.

Denise has gone all out to make vegan ice cream that?s not only tasty, but also healthier. Some people may naturally associate vegan food as healthy, but it?s not necessarily true. For example, there?s this local vegan fast food restaurant that positions itself as being healthy, but it isn?t ? it serves deep fried food that?s highly unhealthy; fruit juices are concentrates rather than fresh juices; even the soup seems to be processed food served from a can, stripped of the taste of its original ingredients. Basically junk food in vegan form. I had it before and it was pretty gross; I don?t intend to have it again. Such isn?t the highest form of what veganism is about.

Brownice, on the other hand, is a healthier option compared to conventional ice cream. Apart from not using dairy or eggs, it does not use artificial flavouring and colouring, is low fat, all-natural and is made with organic brown rice, fruits and nuts. As a bonus ? Because of the natural and healthier ingredients used, the ice cream tends to be lower in calories compared to its dairy counterparts.

Denise?s vision is to create delectable and healthier desserts for you and me, whether you?re a vegan or not. She once came across a child who was lactose-intolerant and couldn?t have any ice cream (not the conventional kind anyway; and not when almost all mainstream ice cream uses dairy). Her world changed she saw him happily enjoying her vegan ice cream. From then on, she strove to create the best vegan delights so that everyone in the world can enjoy his/her cake and ice cream too.

Denise creates all the ice cream herself, using her own recipe. Today, she has created over 20 flavors, with about 10 of the flavors being mainstays.?I?m always in awe of chefs/cooks, because it?s an art to whip up dishes/meals that taste better than the sum of their parts. For the same reason, I?m amazed by Denise and how she creates such amazing, mouth-watering ice cream, without conventional, commercial ingredients.

Brownice,?Dann?s Daily and Delcie?s Desserts strike a chord in me in that I can?taste the organic quality in the food, and the warmth of the creators? hearts when I consume their creations. It?s not like mass manufactured products, which taste empty and bland.?IMO, it takes true creativity, talent and passion to create ice cream that tastes so great.

My favorite Brownice flavor by far is peanut butter caramel. French chocolate is second, followed by hazelnut.

Brownice ice cream. Flavors here: Green tea and Tropicana (Mixture of fruits). Unfortunately, there?s no picture of Peanut butter caramel. If it helps, it?s cream colored with caramel mixed into the ice cream. Heavenly. ?

Denise also creates ice cream cakes on a made-to-order basis. The above is her mud pie creation ? Mudvelicious. It consists of 3 layers: Brown rice crisp at the bottom, followed by a thick layer of French chocolate, and a layer of Hazelnut chocolate. The mud pie is topped off with dark chocolate syrup and sprinkled with almond nuts. I had it a few weeks ago. It was delicious!

Brownice Ice Cream
The very kind, warm-hearted Denise and me!

Denise started making her self-made vegan ice cream 2 years ago, about June 2009. As she gradually built up a cult-following to her ice cream, she eventually named it Brownice in Jul ?10. The rest became history.

I now present to you, Denise Lim, founder and owner of Brownice Ice Cream:

Q1) Tell us more about you Denise ? Who are you and what are your passions in life?

I?m Denise Lim, 33 this year, founder and owner of Brownice.

I have always loved desserts, this passion for desserts started since young and it has not stopped till today. I would have ice-cream almost daily when I was little. And as my affection for desserts grow with age, I started experimenting with vegan desserts, especially when I realized there are many people who are lactose-intolerant and can?t have their piece of cake and ice-cream! We need to sweeten our lives as much as we spice them up!

I am essentially a homely person, I love staying home to read and experiment with new dessert recipes. Before Brownice, I worked as an engineer for 5 years after my graduation from NUS in Electrical Engineering. I adore animals so my life?s always filled with at least one, and they gave me really good company (they still do!) especially when I am the only child.

(Celes: Denise really loves animals ? she shared with me pictures of her 2 bunnies, which are the loveliest and most adorable creatures I?ve ever seen (alongside Brooklyn ?)! Denise has hamsters as well, and often speaks of them affectionately as part of her family.)

Q2) What is Brownice and who do you target?

Many tasty treats are never healthy ? they?re either high in fat, sugar, artificial ingredients or all of the above.?Brownice provides healthier, guilt-free, low-fat delights to people who want better options. My target audience is everyone. Even when we insist on having our ice-cream vegan, free from artificial flavourings, additives etc, it does not mean we should compromise on the taste.

Q3) When did you first start your company?

Jul 2010. Since we started, till now, we have experienced a healthy 70% growth in revenue. The increasing demand in alternative food and desserts has certainly helped. So has the awareness we have been receiving, whether through word-of-mouth or events and media, as well as pure hard work.

(Celes: Jul ?10 is considered the official start date for the company as it was when the ice cream was given its name, Brownice. Before that, Denise has long been practicing her craft and selling ice cream to a growing base of satisfied customers via a friend?s organic shop, since about Dec ?09. The 70% growth is its sales today (Jun ?11) relative to Jul ?10, so that?s quite a huge jump in just 11 months!)

Q4) You studied engineering in NUS and worked in engineering for 5 years. What made you decide to quit your engineering job at the 5th year?

That was my first job and I remember wondering if it would be my only job. ?Things were going well, too comfortably well. I had good bosses, fun colleagues and in fact, I had a promotion to ?senior engineer?.

The promotion set me thinking about my future and the prospects of climbing the corporate ladder didn?t exactly thrill me. ?I was (still am) a workaholic. ?I figured since I spend most of my time working, I should do something I really love. ?So I left, for fear that the job sets me in such comfortable state that I dare not leave. I wanted to experience more, before I can discover my real passion.

Q5) What did you do after you quit your engineering job?

I joined an American MNC dealing with industrial tape as a business development manager for Asia Pacific. ?But travelling and business weren?t my calling. ?I was so drained I left without a job, and wanted to spend some time to ?discover my passion?. ?I dabbled with art and teaching after I left.

I would say teaching did become my passion. ?My students gave me precious memories I wouldn?t give up for anything. However, it became very comfortable too and I craved for personal growth. I started learning many things from knitting (yup, the woolly stuff), to food and nutrition (I took a part-time course), to baking and cooking.

This was the time I started to work part-time at a friend?s organic shop.?(Celes: More on this in next question.)

Q6) How did you first come up with the idea for Brownice?

In Jul ?09, I was working full-time in an International School as a teacher. At that time, my friend set up a bakery shop. I began to work there on a part-time basis over the weekends, baking and making desserts, while still teaching full-time. This allowed me to pursue my passion in baking and desserts.

As time passed, I got to meet many people with lactose intolerance, so I started creating desserts which these people could enjoy too, and it was very encouraging to receive positive response from those who had tried. It was very motivating and that kind of satisfaction was just beyond words.

A particular incident really changed me when I met a child who was lactose-intolerant and could not enjoy most desserts and had never tried an ice-cream, so I was even more determined to create more vegan desserts, especially ice-cream. When I saw how happy the child was, enjoying his ice-cream, that marked a turning point for me.

(Celes: This marked the point where the niche for Brownice was carved, where Denise identified the unmet consumer need for vegan-friendly, healthier desserts. She was only able to arrive at this point by first pursuing her passion in desserts.

It was the same for Delcie too, who discovered her niche in creating vegan desserts after pursuing her passion in bakery. Likewise for Derek, who discovered CD Baby after first acting on his instinct to sell his music, then helping his friends sell theirs. As with Carol, who founded Citrusox because she was acting on her entrepreneurial instincts.

Inspiration doesn?t come to you just by sitting around and waiting for it to hit you; it only makes it way to people who are already acting and pursuing their path. Is there something you?re interested to pursue but you?re holding back on? If so, perhaps you should start acting on that first, even in the littlest of ways, vs. waiting for inspiration to strike. Because the latter only happens after the former is in place, and not the other way round.)

Q7) After you came up with the idea, how did you get started? Please walk us through what the first 1 year of your journey was like.

I started selling my vegan ice cream at my friend?s store around Dec ?09, as they had an NEA-approved kitchen (Celes:?NEA = National Environmental Agency. In Singapore, you need to have an NEA-approved kitchen to sell food items.) As I saw more demand, I adjourned to take part in events, weekend markets and farmer?s market. I must say, word-of-mouth helps a great deal.

For the first few months, things were taking off slowly and steadily as I did not seek opportunities aggressively. I was more focused in perfecting the ice-cream and creating more flavors.

On Jun ?10, I took part at a bazaar at Orchard Central weekend market and sold my ice cream there. It was after the bazaar that I tasted sweet success. The response was really good, so I decided to quit both my full-time teaching job and my part-time job at my friend?s organic shop and work on my business full-time.

Jul ?10 was the date we named the ice-cream Brownice. But we officially launched the Brownice brand (which included marketing materials, shop decor) in stages. Being a humble start-up, we didn?t have a big official launch like a party or open-house.

(Celes: Brownice had built its audience base before it was even officially launched with its brand name and shop space in Jul ?10. It broke even 6 months after it was launched in Jul ?10 ?- Similar to?Dann?s,?Citrusox and?Udders. The rest was history.

The most important thing about starting your business is to create your product and get it out there to the consumers. As other business owners in the interview series and I have repeatedly alluded to, there?s no need to overthink the process of starting your business. All it does is just prevent others from benefiting from your work. How fair are you being to them?)

Q8) How long did it take (after starting) before you experienced the first signs of success? What were those signs of success?

About 7 months after I first began selling my ice cream at my friend?s store ? During the Orchard bazaar in Jun ?10. As for signs of success, there was a sudden surge of demand and orders.

Q9) At which point did you know with certainty that it had taken off?

After the success Brownice experienced from Orchard Central weekend market, many corporate organizations called to enquire about our vegan ice-cream and invited us to their offices, and we have customers who will go all out to promote our vegan ice-cream to their friends, colleagues and family members. They are really our best publicity, and we appreciate their kind gesture very much.

(Celes: Like the other businesses in the interview series, the point where Denise knew that Brownice had taken off was when she received requests from all fronts. If you start getting more demand than you can handle, you know for sure you?re on the right track. Keep working in that direction.)

Q10) What would you say are the biggest drivers of your success today?

Love. Passion. Excitement. In this modern world, many feel stressed going to work, but I look forward to start a new chapter everyday, the excitement of changing people?s mindset of ?healthier desserts will not taste good? just spurs me on to more and better creations. I love the challenge of debunking the myth of healthier desserts do not taste good.

(Celes: Work without passion is meaningless. Whoever says that work is not meant to be enjoyable is full of cr*p. If you don?t enjoy what you?re doing, then what?s the whole point of it all? Remember, it?s not about passion or money ? it?s passion AND money.)

Q11) Looking back, what were the biggest obstacles you faced in your entrepreneurship journey to date? How did you overcome them?

1) Insufficient human traffic at first shop space. My first shop space (in Jul ?10) did not garner sufficient human traffic to sustain a healthy business, that was quite an obstacle.

How it was addressed: That did not deter me from moving forward. I started taking steps of reaching out to people through other means such as taking part in bazaars, weekend markets etc.

2) Neglecting branding and business planning. ?I was so into ice-cream making, I focused all my energy into perfecting the ice-cream and . ?That was a big lesson for me.

When we first started selling vegan ice-cream at the organic shop, there was no name (not to mention branding) and packaging was a transparent plastic cup (leftover salad dressing holders in the shop). ?At Orchard Central, we must have looked equally clueless, with a plain white freezer. ?We were provided with a table and had no idea what to do with it. ?So we put lots of soft toys, and people thought we were selling toys? ?:|

How it was addressed:?My friends have helped me a lot in these aspects, they saw the ?problem? and lent a helping hand. ?In the shop, my colleague, Jaye, was literally the walking and talking advertisement. ?She passionately told EVERY customer about the ice-cream, offered samples, typed the ingredients list, collected feedback and so on. ?If we say the ice-cream is made with love, then she has certainly conveyed this love to the customers. ?I drew a lot of strength from her belief in me.

At Orchard Central, my friend/volunteer worker, Ruzhan, who is an engineer, sold the ice-cream with so much enthusiasm, he surprised both himself and me. ?I remember he told me after the first day of selling, that he never knew he could sell. ?It didn?t matter how our booth looked, because passers-by would see his big smile and enthusiasm in offering samples. ?Most people could not resist his sincerity and many would buy after sampling.

Passion and Sincerity kept Brownice going in our early days.

Q12) What are the biggest lessons you?ve learned in this journey?

This journey has certainly honed my skills in business management. Even till today, I have not stopped learning about running a business of my own. Everyday, I learn something new. When I first started, I was focusing primarily on making ice-cream and did not look too much into the business aspect. But as the brand and business grow, I have to start being aware of the business aspects of Brownice, including public relations and marketing.

(Celes: I think Denise did a fantastic job in caring for Brownice as a business. Rather than handle all aspects of business management herself, she focused on what she does best, which is the creation of the product ? ice cream, and engaged specialist agencies to handle other aspects of the business, such as branding and PR/advertising. Nothing wrong though if you choose to handle all aspects of your business internally ? there are pros/cons for each path and it?s really up to what you?re most comfortable with.)

Q13) For someone who is starting a new business for the first time, what are the top 3 things you?ll advise him to do/focus on, and why?

1) Take time to perfect the product. ?Get as much feedback as you can and work on it.?Be confident enough to know negative feedback on the product is not reflective of your abilities. Just because you made a cake that didn?t turn out well doesn?t make you a poor baker.?This confidence will allow customers to give you their honest feedback, without fearing?they?ll hurt your feelings.

2) Since you?re reading TPEB, you probably embrace learning and?self-improvement, so I guess I don?t have to elaborate.?I?ll still list it because it?s really my personal mantra.??Open your mind and learn everyday.?

3) Work hard. ?If you need convincing, read Malcolm Gladwell?s Outliers,?Chapter 2 ? The 10,000 hour rule.?Hard work has many names: Passion, dedication, sincerity, thoughfulness,?good service, efficiency, leading by example?

I?d like to state specific things like finding the right location etc.?But these are not applicable to everyone. ?It then dawned on me?that every business is different and every owner will have his/her?lessons to learn. ?The consistent thing is, if we keep an open?and humble mind, we?ll learn what we need to. ?And if we keep that perseverance going, we?ll get there.

Q14) What?s next in your plans?

I would like to expand so that more people get to enjoy vegan ice-cream without guilt! This involves??parking? more Brownice kiosks to make ourselves more accessible to everyone and creating more guilt-free vegan indulgence.

Special thanks to Denise for this interview! Denise is the founder and owner of Brownice, the amazing vegan ice cream that?s low-fat, all-natural and free of artificial flavouring and coloring. To find out more about Brownice, visit www.Brownice.com.

Obama Gives Israel an Ultimatum

Obama's not going to get the answer he wants:
The United States gave Netanyahu an ultimatum on renewing negotiations with the Palestinians, according to reports cited by Israel Radio Sunday morning.

According to the ultimatum, Netanyahu has to decide within a month whether he agrees to accept US President Barack Obama's platform and resume talks based on 1967 lines.

Bibi already schooled Obama in a face-to-face meeting with Obama in front of the press corps. He quite clearly said that going back to 1967 borders was a non-starter. ?The aftermath of that meeting was ugly:
Shortly after the photo-op meeting and ?working lunch? with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the one that saw President Obama openly chastised by the Prime Minister for Obama?s earlier public comments regarding wanting to see Israel return to its 1967 borders, the president verbally ?went off? on Richard Daley in the private study area that adjoins the Oval Office. President Obama?s verbal attack was clearly heard by numerous staff up and down the West Wing hallways.

The essence of the president?s rage and embarrassment can best be summed up with him yelling out very loudly, ?What the f*** was that!?? That phrase was apparently repeated a number of times in the span of about five minutes, a time period in which Obama?s voice became ?louder and louder? and culminating in Obama exclaiming, ?Never again! Do you understand me? Never again!? Any response by Bill Daley back to the president, if given, was not overheard.

It's not going to take a month for Obama to get his answer.
