Roger Ebert Announces Indefinite Hiatus for At the Movies

It looks like Roger Ebert never found that "angel." In a post to his blog on Wednesday night, the legendary film critic revealed that his television show, 'Ebert Presents At the Movies,' will close its balcony at the end of December for an unknown length of time while additional financing is sought to keep 'At the Movies' on air. "This move is necessary to allow the public television stations that carry our show to plan their programs for the beginning of the new year. We held off as long as possible but we had to give notice today," wrote Ebert about the hiatus.

Back in November, Ebert revealed the dire financial situation surrounding 'At the Movies,' which was funded mostly by Ebert and his wife, Chaz. "Unless we find an angel, our television program will go off the air at the end of its current season," he wrote. "Usually in television, people use evasive language. Not me. We'll be gone. I want to be honest about why this is. We can't afford to finance it any longer."

The critic, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002 and has undergone many operations since, was more upbeat about 'At the Movies' chances in his current blog post.

"These are hard times," he wrote. "But you have told us you like the show. A touching number of viewers offered to send us money directly. One of the avenues we may take is a Kickstarter campaign, as you suggested. But we will let you know as soon as that is worked out. Please have faith in us as we sort through the possibilities. Thank you and Happy Holidays."

'At the Movies,' with hosts Christy Lemire and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, has aired 50 times since debuting in January.
