I am a 24 y/o male, been living on my own since 18 and don?t have parents in my life. I?ve worked since I was 12 doing construction and architectural drafting jobs. I joined the Marine Corps Reserve and just got out after a 4 year contract. During my time in the marine corps I enrolled in an online Bachelor of Construction Management degree and have 2 1/2 years left. So I?ve been working full-time, doing class work at nights and weekends and doing the Marine Reserves things and living on my own. I make a decent wage at my current job due to my work experience I have under my belt. But because I have to pay for everything on my own, I don?t have much money left over each month after paying for my basics. I was forced to grow up as a young adult and haven?t done much fun things in my life. I feel I am surrounded by older people everywhere I go that all have more work experience and/or college degrees, savings, own homes, have nice cars and everything else and also have money to buy nice things like big TV?s and go on nice vacations. Then for the younger people my age, weither with or without a degree, they always seem to have money to go shopping and go out and do fun things and go on awesome vacations, even if they work a part-time minimum wage job.
I know that after I get my degree I can get jobs making atleast $60k starting out, and $80k+ with 5 years work experience in construction management. But for now, I feel that because I don?t have excess money to spend like everyone else that I don?t fit in with society. I also feel that because others my age have already finished their college and seem to be enjoying their lives (buying homes, new cars, going places, making good money) that I am a loser. I came from having nothing to having a good job and decent vehicle so far, so I am appreciative of that. It just seems that people don?t look at my life situation before judging me on my current income. I?m 24, without parents, and not even done with college. I sometimes have to tell this to people when they wonder why I can?t afford things.
